Partly Mechanical; Hardly Human
“Tell me something that happened today.”
Zach thought a moment. “On the Red Line, there was this group of girls,” he caught himself, seeing her look. “Of young ladies. They were going to visit colleges, I think, probably Northwestern, heading the wrong way. They didn’t seem like they had ever been on public transit before. They wouldn’t touch anything. It was part novelty, and part disgust.”
Rae smiled, setting her chin on her palm. “I love seeing people like that. I bet they had maps.”
Zach nodded. “They did. They were talking about what they wanted to do when the grow up.” He saw Rae straighten up, eyes getting brighter. “I know, I know; I almost shrieked when I heard that. One of them said she wanted to go into accounting. Another girl, this one was my favorite, she asked what an accountant actually did. Completely serious, too.”
“Don’t you wish we all didn’t know what accountants did?”
Zach looked at her quizzically, a wad of hair falling over his face as he tilted his head. He scrunched up his nose to push it away. “Not really. Anyway, the girl who wanted to be an accountant, she didn’t even know! The rest of the ride, they were trying to figure it out.”
